Azimio to prove today that IG Koome's claim of hired bodies is a lie and is just UDA insensitive propaganda

The Azimio coalition intends today (11th August) to parade caskets of victims of police brutality as a rebuttal to statements made by Police Inspector General Japhet Koome that Azimio "hired bodies" to disparage the police. Prayers will also be offered today by Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya in memory of the supporters who died during anti-government protests in Bondo, Siaya County.

According to an invitation issued by the opposition group yesterday(Thursday 10th August), officials of Azimio will use the occasion to call for the detention of police officers involved in the killings and request that the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigate claims of "crimes against humanity."

The invitation said, in part, "Leaders will use this occasion to denounce the Kenya Police Service and demand that specific police officers who were involved in the killings be held personally accountable."

"Caskets of those who were killed will be laid for public viewing before being transmitted to their respective homes for interment," it continued.

Bondo's Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Park will be the venue of the prayers. The coalition led by Raila Odinga had previously written to the ICC and urged for the local and international prosecution of IG Koome. On Tuesday, the police chief alleged that Azimio had hired bodies that they would later claim belonged to victims of police violence.

Senior members of the community are allegedly purchasing bodies from morgues and calling the media to claim that the victims were slain by police, Koome said in remarks that shook the nation because of their absurdity.

The allegations, which have been criticized as being inappropriate in several circles, were rejected by Raila. "I have no idea what planet he inhabits." According to the former prime minister, "the bodies we buried had bullet wounds and death certificates stating the manner of death."

In addition to criticism over his comments, the IG has received requests for an apology from the deceased's family. The police chief has also received criticism from the association of morticians, who have urged him to provide proof of the careless utterances he made.

The morticians stated in a statement that "mortuary technicians are governed by ethics, principally among them being respect and confidentiality of the deceased and respect for the loss, feelings, and right of the bereaved to mourn their loved ones in peace."

Azimio criticized the IG as well. "The inspector general is lying," you might say. He is stretching the truth," claimed Joyce Osogo, a representative for Homa Bay Woman.

Sen. Edwin Sifuna of Nairobi criticized the IG for being insensitive. "It is well known that the majority of the Kenya Kwanza regime's citizens lack the qualifications necessary to hold either a public or private post. It's time for Kenyans to consider their sanity," according to Sifuna. Koome has kept quiet about the protester killings, which have been documented by numerous rights organizations and demonstrate that more than 20 people died as a result of police brutality.

Last Monday, the organizations announced they will pursue the individual accountability of the officers implicated in the killings, led by Amnesty International and the Law Society of Kenya.
