"Deals" with Congo started long before Ruto

There have been whispers of deals between President Ruto and the Democratic Republic of Congo. And details of some of these deals are not really in the public domain. But what would shock many Kenyans is the fact that historically Kenya has always had many deals with Congo.

Jomo Kenyatta and Mobutu
Sese Seko "consultative
meeting" in State house
February 1971.

Although the first presidents of the two nations, Kenya and Congo are long dead, the ties they established (both official and unofficial) are still binding and very much alive today.

When Kanu's red cockerel, which could handle a battleaxe, was shown to Joseph Desire Mobutu by his Kenyan counterpart, Jomo Kenyatta, he was so moved and impressed. He laughed a lot about it.

He was received like an African king on that visit when he came to Kenya in February 1971. He also heartily (maybe too enthusiastically) shook hands with dignitaries who showed up in a picture that was uncharacteristic of him because he was missing his signature leopard cap and Chinese collarless shirt.

In October 1971, when he finally departed Kenya, he renamed his nation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the Republic of Zaire. Incidentally in 1997, the nation restored its former name which is what is still in use today.

In January 1972 in yet another move that was inspired by his long visit to Kenya, Mobutu changed his name from Joseph-Désiré Mobutu to Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu wa za Banga, which means "the cockerel above all others and the all-powerful warrior,". He also ordered the renunciation of all European names by Congolese people.

Mobutu came to power in Congo in 1965 through some very dramatic and also bloody and gory events. It started with the popular elected Prime Minister Patrice Lumumbu being kidnapped from his official residence and even photographed with hands tied behind a military truck. He was later executed and his remains dissolved in acid because it was feared that if the people discovered what had happened to him insurrection would have resulted. That is how popular Lumumba was.

Clearly not the kind of character that would have boosted President Jomo Kenyatta's image and so it is quite instructive that he still visited Kenya for months on end and did "deals" with Jomo.

Incidentally Mobutu's end was a pale shadow of the life he lived. He died in exile and was buried in some ordinary graveyard in Rabat, Morocco on 7th September 1997. His old friend and inspiration Jomo Kenyatta of course had a state funeral.
